Former India cricketer Yograj Singh is quite happy with Rohit Sharma’s decision to not retire from the ODI format of the game.
After leading India to the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, Rohit addressed the inevitable question regarding his future in international cricket. The 37-year-old, in his inimitable style, confirmed that he is not retiring from the 50-over format.
"Koi future plan hai nahi, jo chal raha hai chalega (no future plan, whatever is happening will continue). I am not going to retire from this format," Rohit told reporters.
Speaking to ANI, Yograj said both Rohit and Virat Kohli should focus on the 2027 ODI World Cup and spend their energies on how to win that tournament.
Under Rohit’s captaincy, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single match. However, Australia outplayed them in the title clash at Ahmedabad.
"The best thing is that Rohit Sharma said he is not retiring. Well done, my son. Nobody can retire Rohit and Virat. They should think about retirement after winning the 2027 ODI World Cup. I had said this before India would win," Yograj stated.
India remained unbeaten throughout the Champions Trophy 2025. This marked Rohit's second ICC trophy as captain, following India's T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, where they edged past South Africa in a thrilling final at Barbados.
After the T20 World Cup win last year, Rohit Sharma had announced his retirement from the shortest format for India. It remains to be seen if he gets picked in India’s squad for the Test tour of England in June.
Meanwhile, Yograj slammed the critics for questioning Rohit’s fitness and said that people like Shama Mohamed (Congress spokesperson) should prove their fitness first before commenting the Indian captain.
"Some people were raising questions about Rohit Sharma's fitness. I want to ask Madam (Congress leader Shama Mohamed) about her fitness. It does not suit them to comment on players," Yograj remarked.
