Rohit Sharma, India’s Test and ODI captain, has reportedly discussed his captaincy future with the BCCI selection committee in a review meeting held on Sunday.
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, attended the meeting as well. The BCCI's top brass wanted an answer from the Indian team's management on the recent performance, especially the 0-3 home whitewash against New Zealand and the 1-3 Border-Gavaskar series loss to Australia.
According to reports, Rohit stated during the meeting that he intended to continue leading the team for a few more "months."
As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy progressed, concerns over Rohit's long-term Test career grew, especially in light of his batting performance. Even though India lost that match as well, Rohit chose to sideline himself for the final Test in Sydney.
Rohit is reported to have told the board that he wants to continue leading the squad for a few more months during the meeting with the BCCI when Agarkar and Gambhir also shared their opinions. Meanwhile, Rohit has asked the BCCI to continue looking for a new captain.
As per Dainik Jagran, although Jasprit Bumrah’s name was suggested as Rohit's long-term replacement during the discussion, some people are still dubious about his qualifications and fitness. Bumrah's capacity to guide the squad through a five-match Test series was specifically questioned.
Bumrah participated in all five Test matches during India's tour to Australia, leading the team in two of them. He didn't even bowl in the second innings of the final Test match in Sydney, though, due to a back issue.
Top managers will undoubtedly start to question the nation's star pacer's long-term captaincy because tofhis fitness concerns.
The BCCI will have time to decide for a new captain after the ICC Champions Trophy where Rohit Sharma is likely to lead India. After the CT 2025, the players will disperse to join their respective IPL franchise teams and India’s next international assignment is the Test tour of England.
It isn't yet known whether Rohit will be the captain of the Test team for that event.
