Prithvi Shaw’s stocks are on the decline in the last few years. Recently, the 25-year-old was left out of Mumbai’s squad for the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Disappointed by the setback, Shaw shared an Instagram story and highlighted his impressive List-A career stats to express his frustration.
However, this move didn’t go down well and several issues have surfaced since then. Shaw's fitness and discipline have come under severe scrutiny.
Now, a report published in TOI claims that Shaw has been asked to play in the Police Shield Invitational Tournament, where he will lead the Mumbai Colts team. For the unversed, the competition involves two-day matches at various venues around Mumbai.
"Shaw has been asked by Mumbai's senior selection committee chairman Sanjay Patil to play for the Mumbai Colts team in the Police Shield, which is starting from today. While he isn't available for the first match on Saturday, Shaw has agreed to play in the Police Shield from next Saturday. We want him to play for Mumbai again," MCA secretary Abhay Hadap told TOI on Friday (December 20).
Prithvi Shaw was part of Mumbai's recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning campaign but failed to live up to the expectations. The opening batter managed to score only 197 runs in 9 matches with the best score of 49.
Adding to his woes, Shaw went unsold during the IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last month. Not long ago, he was snubbed from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for the first phase.
Speaking to news agency PTI, an MCA official raised concerns over Shaw’s fitness and discipline issues.
"In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, we were playing with 10 fielders as we were forced to hide Prithvi Shaw. The ball would pass near him, and he would barely be able to get to it," the official said.
"Even while batting, we could see he was troubled reaching to the ball. His fitness, discipline and attitude are poor and it is pretty simple, there cannot be different rules for different players," he added.
After winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Mumbai skipper Shreyas Iyer had said that Prithvi Shaw needs to get his work ethics right and if he can do so, then sky will be the limit for him.
"He needs to get his work ethics right, if he does, the sky's the limit for him. We cannot babysit anyone. At the end of the day, it's his responsibility to figure out things for himself," Shreyas stated.
