Waqar has previously served as Pakistan as head coach and bowling coach.

Waqar Younis | GettyAfter his retirement from international cricket, legendary pacer Waqar Younis has had multiple stints with the Pakistan cricket team as head coach and bowling coach.

According to a report, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has approached Waqar again but this time for a different role. The PCB is apparently contemplating appointing the former fast bowler as the director of cricket affairs.

A well-placed source has informed news agency PTI that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has taken a cue from other boards and wants a former player to handle all cricket-related matters.

"Waqar Younis is a top candidate to be handed over complete responsibility of looking after men's cricket, including liaising with the two foreign head coaches, national selectors and domestic cricket departments," the source said, as quoted by PTI.

The source further stated that the PCB chief aims to give complete authority to Waqar to manage men's cricket affairs as the director.

"Naqvi doesn't want to centralise all powers as he wants to decentralise things, especially where cricket issues are concerned. In future, even international cricket schedules and issues would be looked over by the director of cricket," he added.

As per the source, Naqvi is currently focused on preparations for staging the Champions Trophy 2025 and matters related to the tournament along with other administrative decisions in the board.

"Being the federal interior minister, Naqvi believes that it is only fair that all cricket matters are handled by specialists and not only people in administration," he remarked.

The director of cricket would reportedly have powers to appoint other former players for assistance.

Waqar Younis, 52, is settled in Australia with his family. It remains to be seen if he accepts the PCB chief’s offer to join the board in a new capacity.
