India captain Rohit Sharma’s altruistic gesture towards Indian team support staff has come to light after Rahul Dravid declined to take his bonus money and instead made sure the coaching staff got equal prize money for winning the T20 World Cup 2024.

Dravid's gesture meant that batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip were rewarded with INR 2.5 crore each.

Captain Rohit and coach Dravid were to receive INR 5 crore each as part of the INR 125 crore prize money given to the Indian squad for winning the T20 World Cup. While Dravid's pay-cut act received many plaudits, Rohit's generosity cannot be overlooked.

The prize money was announced on July 1, but it sparked some concerns. The initial breakdown of the INR 125 crore distribution among players, coaches, and reserve players suggested that certain support staff members would receive far less. These members include the throwdown specialist, analysts, masseuse, physio, and others.

Now as per a report by Dainik Jagran, a player revealed that on the chartered flight back from Barbados to India, Rohit was willing to give up some of his chunk of money to ensure that everyone got paid handsomely and equally.

On the other hand, Rohit’s gesture made sure that the rest of the support staff got INR 2 crores each. Rohit did not name a specific member for whom he was willing to make the sacrifice, but the player did explain that these are the characteristics of a brilliant leader who considers everyone engaged in the team's success.

It was only after Rohit's firm stance that the BCCI decided to distribute INR 2 crore each to strength and conditioning coaches, physios, analysts, and others.
