Rohit Sharma to lead, 6 Indian players included in ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year 2023

Two Australians, two South Africans and one New Zealander also made the cut.

Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj | GettyIndia’s Rohit Sharma has been named the captain, as a total of 6 Indian players made it to the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2023, as announced by the ICC on January 23, 2024. Apart from this, Champions Team Australia’s two players were also named in the ICC ODI XI for 2023.

The India skipper continued his remarkable record in ODI cricket with yet another sensational year in 2023 with the bat as he amassed a whopping 1255 runs at an average of 52. Rohit was at his brilliant best throughout much of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, with his magnificent knock of 131 against Afghanistan being the standout knock.

Apart from him, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were the other batters from the Indian team to be included in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2023. Shubman Gill scored 1584 runs in ODIs in 2023 and had started the year with a brilliant 208 against New Zealand.

Virat Kohli, on the other hand, top-scored in the ICC World Cup 2023 with 765 runs with 3 centuries and 6 fifties to his name. He scored a total of 1377 runs in ODIs in 2023 and scored a total of 6 centuries. This helped him break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries and become the first batter to 50 ODI tons.

Kuldeep Yadav was the lone Indian spinner in this XI as he finished with 49 ODI scalps in 2023. His best bowling came against Pakistan in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup, taking 5/25 and helping India win the match.

India pacers Mohammed Siraj and Mohammad Shami were also included. Siraj collected a total of 44 wickets during 2023 in ODIs, with a best of 6/21 in the Asia Cup final.

Mohammad Shami was the leading wicket-taker for India in World Cup 2023 with 24 scalps and a best of 7/57. He picked four five-wicket hauls in 2023 and his 7/57 in the World Cup semi-final is the best figure for an India Men's player in ODI history.
