As the New Year 2024 begins, the Indian cricket fraternity reflects on the eventful 2023 for both the men's and women's cricket teams, and Sunil Gavaskar was one of them.

Team India had a relatively brilliant year, as they won the Asia Cup and gold at the Asian Games. On the other hand, the Indian women's cricket team reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup and then recorded historic Test match victories against Australia and England.

Reacting to the Indian team’s performance in 2023, the former Indian captain and legendary batter Gavaskar said that it's been an exciting year for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports: “I think it's been a fantastic year for both the men's and the women's team, particularly the way the women's team has performed. Those two Test wins towards the year-end, one against England and one against Australia, both teams against whom the Indian women's team have had tough times earlier on.”

Meanwhile, the Indian men's cricket team had a mix of good and tough moments this year. India did well in bilateral competitions, the Asia Cup, and the Asian Games.

But they faced disappointment in the 2023 World Test Championship Final and the 2023 World Cup Final, losing to Australia in both.

The World Cup loss was surprising because India entered the final on the back of 10 consecutive wins, and the legendary cricketer said that it was just a bad day.

Gavaskar signed off by saying, “That's been the most exciting aspect of cricket apart from, of course, what we saw in the World Cup. The 10 straight wins, and, then, just that one bad day, which sadly happened to be the finals of the World Cup. So really some exciting times in 2023.”
