Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott has retained his job after the team’s much-impressive performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, where they finished sixth on the points table.
On Monday, January 1, 2024, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) extended the tenure of Trott as the national team’s head coach. In the last 18 months, the former England cricketer transformed the Afghanistan cricket team from underdogs to one of the most exciting teams in the world.
Under Trott’s coaching, Afghanistan won games against England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands, and they were even close to beating Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023. Well, Trott had joined the Afghanistan team on an 18-month contract in July 2022, which ended in 2023.
Having been impressed with his work during his tenure, the ACB re-signed Trott for another 12 months, which included the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies.
The ACB said in an official statement: “Afghanistan Cricket Board confirms the extension of the contract with Mr Jonathon Trott, the National Team’s Head Coach, for the year 2024. The decision comes in after his successful 18-month tenure, during which he made significant contributions to the team’s progress and development.”
The statement further reads: “Mr. Jonathon Trott expressed his pleasure on the extension of his contract and stated that he is looking forward to spending more time with the squad and building on performances of the recently held ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.”
Notably, Afghanistan won 19 international games in 50 outings under Trott’s coaching.
