AUS v PAK 2023-24: “I really just don’t like to look too far ahead”- Steve Smith on retirement speculations

Steve Smith is currently playing in BBL 13 for Sydney Sixers.

Steve Smith | GettyAce Australia batter Steve Smith spoke on the rumors of his retirement from cricket and said that he is currently trying to enjoy the game day by day and one game at a time. This comes ahead of the first Test between Australia and Pakistan to be played at Optus Stadium in Perth from December 14 onwards.

Despite a less productive season by his standards, Smith's manager Warren Craig has firmly denied that the Australian batting legend will be hanging up his gloves anytime soon.

The former captain, known for his 32 Test hundreds and a 58.61 average, has indicated a desire to continue setting records, including the elusive 10,000 Test runs mark. Smith is focused on contributing to Australia's cricket success, with challenges such as the T20 World Cup and a series against India on the horizon.

Smith said he isn't looking too far ahead and is taking it one game at a time. The 34-year-old also said that he is just looking to go about his business.

“I really just don’t like to look too far ahead. And, you know, I take it series by series, game by game, and just enjoy myself in the moment. We’ll sort all that stuff out and whatever legacy, whatever that looks like, that is not something for me to bother about, really.

I’m not really fussed (about that). Other people can talk about that kind of thing. I just go about my business day by day and just enjoy it,” he told Foxsports.com.au.

Smith also said he is enjoying his role as the vice-captain of the team and is open to helping out young batters coming through the ranks.

I like to go about my business and, particularly if any young players are coming through, I want to try and help them where I can. My door is always open if any of the young batters want to talk about anything and have a conversation. I’m there to help them learn from, I guess, my experiences as well. And then supporting the captain as well. That’s my job as vice-captain, to help him wherever I can. It’s been fun. I’m enjoying it,” Smith added.

Smith is currently playing for Sydney Sixers in the ongoing BBL 2023-24.
