“He’s somebody more like MS Dhoni”- Sreesanth praises Rohit Sharma’s street-smart captaincy

Rohit Sharma led India to World Cup 2023 final.

MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma | XFormer India pacer Sreesanth has likened Rohit Sharma’s street-smart captaincy style to that of former skipper MS Dhoni. This comes after Rohit Sharma led the Indian team to the final of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Rohit Sharma led from the front as he amassed 597 runs in 11 matches with one century and 3 fifties to his name. He tasked himself with giving the Indian team flying starts in the powerplay and India romped into the final undefeated.

However, Pat Cummins’ Australian side proved to be too good in the final on November 19 in Ahmedabad and the Men in Blue lost the summit clash by 6 wickets in the end.

Though Rohit failed to repeat Dhoni's heroics, the veteran Indian opener was thoroughly praised for his leadership at the World Cup. One of his admirers was former India pacer and 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup winner Sreesanth.

Sreesanth said that Rohit Sharma is a street-smart captain similar to how MS Dhoni used to lead the Indian team.

He’s a street-smart cricketer and he’s somebody more like Dhoni bhai who doesn’t just get off the scene straight away. Even if the bowling’s not that great, even if the fielding’s not that great he makes sure he backs up the fielders. It’s a great trend," Sreesanth told FirstPost.

"Even in the World Cup, the players who were not playing he was going to them asking for suggestions. Yes, he’s the captain but he’s been there as their brother and been there as their best friend. So it’s very important. So I think that’s one of the best qualities a captain can have,” Sreesanth added.

Rohit will next be seen in action captaining India in the two-Test series in South Africa.
