Gill closes in on Babar in ODI batting rankings after rising to career-best 2nd spot; Kuldeep makes big gains among bowlers

Shubman Gill has amassed 154 runs from four innings with two half-centuries in the Asia Cup.

Shubman Gill | GettyTeam India are having a great time in the ongoing Asia Cup. In the group-stage, the Men in Blue registered a crushing 10-wicket victory over Nepal while their marquee encounter against Pakistan was abandoned due to rain.

In the first game of the Super-4 round, India thrashed the arch-rivals by 228 runs and then defeated Sri Lanka by 41 runs to secure a place in the final.

Much of India’s success in the continental tournament has been down to the performances of their top-order, featuring skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.

Gill has amassed 154 runs from four innings with two half-centuries and the right-hander has been rewarded in the updated ICC Men’s ODI rankings for batters by rising to a career-best second position.

The India opener has also closed the margin considerably on the top-ranked Babar Azam, with the gap down to just 103 rating points. The Pakistan skipper is heading the list with 863 rating points, followed by Gill with 759 points.

Shubman Gill isn't the only Indian player to make strides in the updated rankings. Kohli moved up two places to eighth and Rohit jumped two spots of his own to ninth on the latest batter rankings, which means India have three players inside the top 10 for the first time in more than four and a half years.

Talking about the ODI bowling rankings, India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has made some ground on the updated list. The left-armer gained five places to seventh on the back of his nine wickets at the Asia Cup. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya advanced four places to sixth on the ODI all-rounder rankings.

Pakistan’s bowlers also made a mark on the rankings update, with pace duo Haris Rauf (up eight places to 21st) and Naseem Shah (up 11 spots to equal 51st) improving dramatically.

Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood increases his lead at the top of the ODI bowler rankings following a three-wicket haul in the first match of their ongoing series against South Africa. The Proteas duo of Keshav Maharaj (up 10 places to 25th) and Tabraiz Shamsi (up 15 spots to equal 29th) also improved on the list for ODI bowlers.
