Prithvi Shaw to turn up for Northamptonshire again in 2024 County Championship; Sai Sudharsan signed by Surrey

Shaw's stint with Northamptonshire this year was cut short due to a knee injury.

Prithvi Shaw | GettyIndia opener Prithvi Shaw, who sustained a knee injury while playing for Northamptonshire earlier this month, will turn up for the same County Cricket club in 2024.

Shaw was in red-hot form in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup 2023. The dashing right-hander slammed a record-breaking 244 off 153 balls against Somerset, followed by an unbeaten 126 off 76 deliveries against Durham.

Prithvi aggregated 429 runs from innings at a remarkable average of 143.00 before he injured himself while fielding against Durham on August 13.

“I’m so excited to be heading back to Northamptonshire next summer. Even though it was over quickly, I really enjoyed my time there,” Shaw told the club in a release.

“It’s a great club to be a part of, and I felt so welcome by everyone immediately. I can’t wait to get back over. My goal is always to help win games for the team, and it was so disappointing to get injured and have to leave early this time.”

Shaw’s return to Northamptonshire next year will be for both the County Championship and the One-Day Cup.

“Prithvi is a phenomenal talent and what he delivered for us in such a short space of time was incredible. He was utterly disappointed not to stay longer due to his injury as he wanted to play some red-ball cricket, so the chance for him to do this next year is really exciting for us all,” NCCC head coach John Sadler said.

Meanwhile, uncapped India opener Sai Sudharsan has been roped in by Surrey County Cricket Club for the remainder of its County Championship season.

Sudharsan, 21, has featured in only eight first-class matches for Tamil Nadu so far, scoring 598 runs at an average of 42.71 with two hundreds and a half-century.

Commenting on Sudharsan's signing, Surrey head coach Alec Stewart said, “With the busy schedule of international and domestic cricket around the world, I'm pleased to add Sai Sudharsan to our available squad of players.

"Sai has come highly recommended to me by people I hugely respect, including a couple of the greats of the Indian game, who have seen and worked closely with him.

“Sai will add to the batting options for the final three games of the season, and we look forward to welcoming him to the dressing room,” Stewart said in a club statement.

Sudharsan will be available for Surrey's games against Warwickshire (home, September 3), Northamptonshire (home, September 19) and Hampshire (away, September 26).
