Prithvi Shaw | GettyIndia opener Prithvi Shaw sustained a knee injury while playing for Northamptonshire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup 2023 last week.

The dashing right-hander was in red-hot form in the tournament but now will have to sit out for a significant period of time on the sidelines.

According to a CricketNext report, Shaw’s latest scans have shown that the player has damaged his Posterior Cruciate Ligament. The positive thing is that it is a Grade 2 injury which means the cricketer won't have to undergo surgery.

“The result of the scans has revealed that it's a Grade 2 PCL injury. Grade 2 is not that encouraging but still better than Grade 3. Things were initially not looking good for Prithvi but Grade 2 injury and no need of surgery means he should be back on the field soon," a source close to the player was quoted as saying by CricketNext.

Shaw’s treatment is currently going on in UK and he will be staying there for some time. The player is under the watch of BCCI.

“Initially, we thought he could return to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) or home in Mumbai but he will be there in UK for some time at least," the source added.

The severity of his PCL injury means the 23-year-old will be away from competitive action for 6-8 weeks. Therefore, it is likely that the Mumbai batter will miss the upcoming domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Prithvi Shaw was in excellent form for Northamptonshire, registering scores of 34, 26, 244 and 125* from four innings.

Northamptonshire coach John Sadler expressed his disappointment over Shaw’s injury.

"In his short stint Prithvi has made a huge impact on us as a club. It's a huge shame he won't be with us for the remainder of this competition. He's an extremely humble young man, he's very respectful and had been so grateful for the opportunity to represent Northamptonshire," Sadler said.
