Having taken the Men in Blue on the brink of victory against Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup final, former skipper MS Dhoni smashed Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Kulasekara for a six through the long-on region and finished off the chase in style, ending India's 28-year-long wait to lift the elusive title.
His winning shot has since become an undying memory for Indian cricket fans and now the seat where the ball landed is set to be immortalised.
According to a report published in The Indian Express, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to name the seat after Dhoni.
MCA president Amol Kale revealed that the spot where the ball landed has been identified and a seat will be named after the ex-India captain very soon.
“The MCA took a decision today (Monday) to name a seat inside the stadium after MS Dhoni. The spot will be where his match-winning six landed against Sri Lanka in the final of the 2011 World Cup. We will be requesting MS Dhoni to come to the stadium for the inauguration where he will also be presented with a memento,” Kale told The Indian Express.
As per the report, the MCA is likely to inaugurate the ‘memorial’ when CSK travel to Mumbai for their IPL fixture against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 8.
In 2020, the then MCA member Ajinkya Naik had proposed the idea but the Apex Council didn’t pass the decision.
At the iconic Wankhede Stadium, there are already stands named after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Merchant while Polly Umrigar and Vinoo Mankad Gates are there at the venue as well.
However, this will be the first time that a seat will be named after a player not just at the Wankhede but across stadiums in the whole country. The practice is quite common out of India.
