India’s regular white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma and his predecessor Virat Kohli were not part of the team’s just-concluded home T20I series against Sri Lanka.

While the BCCI didn’t provide any reason for their exclusion, there were reports claiming that Team India’s T20I transition has already started.

Now, a report published in NDTV suggests that Rohit and Kohli and unlikely to be considered for T20Is going forward.

According to the report, the BCCI is planning to introduce young players in the shortest format looking ahead at the 2024 T20 World Cup, slated to be held in the USA and the West Indies.

“The new BCCI selection committee, led by Chetan Sharma, which was appointed on January 7 is likely to hold talks with Virat and Rohit regarding their T20I future,” sources told NDTV.

"BCCI wants a young team under Hardik Pandya for T20Is," sources further said.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma on Monday (January 9) addressed a press conference, where he said that he is not giving up on the shortest format.

"We have only six T20Is, three are over. So we'll manage, you know to look after those boys till IPL. Then we'll see what happens after the IPL. But certainly, I've not decided to give up the format," Rohit told reporters on the eve of the first ODI.

He added that a new look team featured in the T20Is against Sri Lanka due to workload management of some of the senior players.

"If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided on just looking at some players' workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that (category) as well."

Rohit Sharma has played 148 T20Is for India, amassing 3853 runs at an average of 31.31 and a strike rate of 139.24, including four hundreds and 29 half-centuries.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli represented India in 115 T20Is, scoring 4008 runs at an average of 52.73 and a strike rate of 137.96 with one ton and 37 fifties.
