Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev expressed his concerns over the fitness of Team India’s all-format captain Rohit Sharma after he missed a number of matches in recent time.
Rohit injured his thumb on the Bangladesh tour and missed two ODIs and two Tests on the tour, as well as the T20I series against Sri Lanka at home. This is not the first time the right-hander’s fitness has kept him out of the action, as he has missed a lot of matches due to injuries.
Reacting to the same, the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian captain doesn’t think the Indian cricket team would feel proud of their captain Rohit when it comes to his fitness standards.
However, the legendary all-rounder said that there is no problem with Rohit Sharma's cricketing skills, but he has serious doubts over his fitness. He further suggested the opener to work hard to improve his fitness.
Kapil Dev was quoted as saying by ABP News: “There's no shortcoming in Rohit Sharma. He has everything but I personally think, there is a huge question mark over his fitness. Is he fit enough? Because a captain should be someone who motivates the other players to get fitter, the teammates should feel proud of their captain.”
He added, “I can say with surety that there is a huge doubt over Rohit's fitness. There has been a lot of criticism that he hasn't scored that many runs since he has become captain, I kind of agree with it but I don't think there is any issue with his cricketing skills. He is a very successful cricketer. If he gets fitter, the entire team will rally around him.”
