BCC secretary Jay Shah on Sunday (January 1) conducted a review meeting related to Team India’s performance in 2022 along with skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.

Also attending the meeting was chief selector Chetan Sharma, NCA head VVS Laxman, and board president Roger Binny.

During the meeting, it was decided that a pool of 20 players will be rotated till the 2023 ODI World Cup, slated to be held in India in October-November.

While the review meeting laid the foundation for the road ahead in the World Cup year, the focus is now likely to shift towards the head coach.

Notably, Dravid’s contract is till the 2023 World Cup and if he doesn’t wish to extend it, Cricketnext has learnt that the BCCI is considering Laxman as the replacement.

Laxman is being seen as favourites as he has already been on coaching assignments with the senior Indian team in Dravid’s absence. He was with the team for the Asia Cup 2022 when Dravid caught COVID-19 and also travelled for various bilateral series last year.

Currently, VVS Laxman is heading operations at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and grooming the next-gen, just like Dravid did before taking charge of the senior team as head coach.

Earlier last year, Laxman travelled with the India U-19 team for the Youth World Cup too and the Yash Dhull-led side ended up winning the marquee tournament.

While Hardik Pandya has been appointed India’s new T20I skipper and Rohit Sharma is likely to continue as the Test and ODI captain, the concept of split coaching is unlikely to happen.

“Has that happened in Indian cricket before?…” a senior BCCI official had said when asked about the possibility of split coaching.
