There is a lot of excitement for India’s next Test assignment at home against Australia as it was expected that one of the four Test matches to be a day-night, pink-ball affair. It was thought that the Ahmedabad Test of the four-match series will be played under lights.
But as per a report in Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is no longer in the favor of hosting day-night Tests. This is despite Australia reportedly showing interest in playing a day-night Test, given that they are unbeaten in pink-ball Tests till now.
The reason for the BCCI's disapproval is the slumping duration of the games. Records have proven that pink ball Tests do not last for all five days, more so when played in India, where none of the games - be it against Bangladesh in Kolkata, against England in Ahmedabad, or against Sri Lanka in Bangalore - lasted for five days.
In fact, the three games lasted three, two, and three days respectively. Statistically, only six of 20 the day-night Tests world over reached the fifth day and two Tests ended in two days itself.
"It leads to a lot of issues, particularly with the public who would purchase tickets for five days," said a BCCI official. Apart from this, the report suggested that the stakeholders were also not happy with the games ending prematurely without lasting the whole duration.
