IND v SL 2023: Hardik Pandya likely to lead India for Sri Lanka T20Is as Rohit’s injury might take more time to heal – Report

India will host Sri Lanka for three T20Is and ODIs each next month.

Hardik Pandya | GettyAll-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to take charge of the Indian T20I team for the home series against Sri Lanka, slated to be played from January 3 to January 7, PTI reported on Thursday (December 22).

According to the report, regular skipper Rohit Sharma's thumb injury might take some more time to heal. However, there is no clarity whether Rohit will relinquish T20I captaincy or the matter put on hold for the time being.

After India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup 2022, a new T20I captain is on the cards once the new selection committee takes over but there hasn’t been an official announcement yet.

While the speculations were rife that India's T20 captaincy will be on the agenda at the BCCI Apex Council meeting on December 21, the report claimed that the topic wasn’t discussed.

"The matter wasn't even on the Apex Council agenda and it wasn't discussed on the forum. Only the selection committee can take a call on captaincy," a BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

However, India's T20 set-up could be completely overhauled and all-rounder Hardik, who has shown his leadership skills for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, is seen as a potential T20I captain.

While Rohit is on the wrong side of his 30s and does not have many years left, he might skip the T20Is or quit the shortest format altogether.

Meanwhile, a former BCCI office-bearer had a suggestion for President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah.

"The first T20I is at the Wankhede, which is Rohit's home ground. Why don't the selectors and the BCCI secretary (Shah) give him a farewell T20 match and there is a graceful changeover of the leadership baton?" he quoted as saying by PTI.

However, in the case of ODIs, Hardik Pandya's fitness and workload management will be analysed before he is handed over the tough job.
