The cricket world was once again divided as India women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma ran out England’s Charlie Dean at the non-striker’s end in the third and final ODI at Lord’s on September 24 as India won the match and the series 3-0.
Deepti’s act was backed by the MCC as they had moved the running out of the non-striker by the bowler from unfair play definition to run out dismissal. However, the English media and multiple current and former England cricketers criticized Deepti Sharma for her actions while saying it was against the spirit of cricket.
England’s captain Heather Knight, who missed the series due to injury, even called Deepti Sharma and the Indian team ‘liars’ for saying that Charlie Dean was given warnings before she was run out.
However, an ESPNCricinfo journalist demolished those claims by painstakingly curating more than 70 instances of Dean leaving the crease at the non-striker’s end during the third ODI and revealed that she was run out at the 73rd instance.
England limited-overs captain Jos Buttler reacted to the same and said that he will call the batter back if any of his bowlers do this and vice-captain Moeen Ali went as far as saying that such dismissals should be removed from the MCC rule book.
However, former India opener Wasim Jaffer, who loves taking digs at such situations decided to poke fun at the English media and the players using an incident from cycling.
Italian cyclist Michael Guerra decided to use a plank while riding to use the advantage of aerodynamics to get past his opponents. Jaffer quoted the video and joked that an English cyclist would have never done such a thing during a race despite it being within the rules.
"It maybe within the rules, but it's against the spirit of cycling. I'd never do it" an English cyclist said," said Jaffer in his tweet.
