Ever since Virat Kohli left the captaincy, Team India have seen a plethora of skippers leading the side. Although Rohit Sharma has been named the full-time all-format skipper, he hasn’t led the team in all the series due to injuries and rest, which has led to others getting the opportunity.
The last few months have seen KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Shikhar Dhawan leading India in different formats and series.
While Rohit has produced impressive results as full-time captain so far, Rahul, Pant and Hardik are seen as front-runners for the leadership role.
Amid the musical chairs around India's captaincy, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has opined that Pant and Rahul are 'work in progress' for the role alongside Hardik, who led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title in their maiden season.
"Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have both been a work in progress as captains. With every passing game, their captaincy is improving and they, along with Hardik, are the three contenders I feel who will replace Rohit Sharma as India's next captain," said Parthiv on his YouTube channel.
However, Parthiv wants Jasprit Bumrah to replace Rohit moving forward, having interacted with the fast bowler while playing for Gujarat.
Last month, Bumrah got the opportunity to captain the country in the Edgbaston Test against England after Rohit tested positive for Covid-19.
“Jasprit Bumrah made his debut for Gujarat under my captaincy. So I had the opportunity to interact with him a number of times about how he wanted to set up a batter to take his wicket. That spoke volumes about how intelligent he is in taking cricketing decisions.”
"Although India lost the Test under his captaincy, he definitely has the intelligence and credentials to be looked at as the future India captain," Parthiv stated.
