Australia’s all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has opened up about his genuine disappointment when he failed to break into the playing XI in the recent Test series in Sri Lanka, after being recalled to the Test side after five years.

Maxwell has not played a Test match since 2017, but on the back of his brilliant show in limited-overs cricket, he was recalled to Australia’s Test side as the injured Travis Head’s cover for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in July.

But unfortunately, the attacking batter couldn’t make it to the playing XI as Head cleared the fitness test, extending the all-rounder’s wait to wear whites for Australia once again.

Speaking about the same, Maxwell said that he was shattered when he was told he would not be making it to the playing XI on the Sri Lanka tour. However, the 33-year-old won’t be giving up hope of playing Test cricket again. He is currently in England, playing in The Hundred 2022 for London Spirit.

As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Glenn Maxwell stated: “I was shattered when I got told. It wasn't that I thought they made the wrong call, I was just genuinely disappointed. I really wanted to play. I loved being a part of it [Test cricket], and I loved the thought of playing again.

Even not thinking about Test cricket for a couple of years, I felt like I was ready again. I loved working with the coaches and coming up with new tactics to deal with difficult spin bowling and balls exploding.”

He signed off by saying, “I'm glad Heady got through his fitness test because I'd have hated to be in because of an injury to one of your players. Unfortunately, they changed the conditions. If it was the same conditions for both Tests, I probably would have played. But they made a slightly better wicket, and the selectors made the right call.”

Notably, Maxwell made his Test debut in 2013 against India and has so far played 7 Tests for Australia and scored 339 runs at an average of 26.07 with a top score of 104.
