Veteran India batter Robin Uthappa stated that after Rohit Sharma's captaincy tenure ends,  he would like to see Jasprit Bumrah lead the national team in the traditional format since the fast bowler has an excellent cricketing mind.

The 28-year-old was cited by Uthappa as his first and sole choice for the Test captaincy in the future.

Bumrah scripted history in the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston earlier this month by becoming only the second seamer to lead India in the longest format of the game after the legendary Kapil Dev.  He led the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who tested positive for Covid-19 days ahead of the series decider.

Bumrah's leadership tenure began with his team losing the Test to England by seven wickets, but he was able to make a lasting impression with his aggressive captaincy.

"For Test cricket, for me, is Jasprit Bumrah. Boomy is easily the top pick for me in Tests. He has got a great cricketing mind. With the way he bowls, you know he has got a great cricketing mind. It's just about giving him time at the top. With experience, he will get better and better," Uthappa said while speaking to  ShareChat’s Audio Chatroom session.

The veteran cricketer added that in addition to choosing either Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul for the white-ball captaincy, he will also consider Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya.

"For one-day and T20 cricket, for me, the choices will be between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for sure. I would have 2 captains and I think you can throw Shreyas Iyer into that mix,” he stated.

When selecting the successor for Rohit as the white-ball captain, the CSK star also emphasized the need to consider a longer-term perspective. A person with an 8-10 year horizon is preferable to one with a 3-4 year horizon.

"There is Hardik as well but I think, given longevity, you would like to give someone who can lead the side for a long period of time than someone who could lead for 3-4 years. You would like someone with an 8 to 10-year horizon. If you are looking at that view, it would be KL and Pant," he added.
