Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has played a huge role in taking Indian cricket to new heights. Regarded as an all-time great, the former Indian skipper was the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

During the 70s and 80s, he was the mainstay of the Indian batting line-up and often bailed his team out of trouble with his ability to bat for a longer period.

Being part of the World Cup 1983 winning squad, Gavaskar represented India in 125 Tests, in which he scored 10122 runs at an average of 51.2 to go with 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries, which at once was the most by any batter. He also played 108 ODIs, scoring 3092 runs at an average of 35.14 along with 1 century and 27 fifties.

Recently, a ground in Leicester was named in his honour. Gavaskar said that he was blessed for the gesture as it’s a recognition for all those who have played with him and also his family. He thanked everyone for supporting him throughout his unforgettable journey.

“Blessed to have a ground in Leicester named after me. This is a recognition not for me but for all those who played with me from tennis ball days to the internationals, my family and last but not least, my fans and well wishers. Thank you all for being part of this unforgettable journey," Sunil Gavaskar wrote on Instagram while sharing a picture.
