Australian speedster Mitchell Starc opened up about not playing in franchise T20 leagues like Big Bash League (BBL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that he will always keep Australian cricket ahead of franchise cricket.
Starc was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2014. He played a key role for RCB in the 2015 edition before ultimately deciding to leave the team to concentrate on international cricket.
Starc joined Kolkata Knight Riders at the beginning of 2018 but was unable to play because of an injury. Then, citing "bubble fatigue," he opted out of the IPL 2022 mega auction.
After the IPL, Starc has now confirmed that he will not partake in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL). The 32-year-final old's season with the Sydney Sixers was in 2014–15.
Starc made the choice because the pacer intends to stay in shape for the next matches and since Australia has a hectic international schedule.
Talking to AAP, Starc said, "I have always enjoyed the BBL when I have played it ... but my approach with all franchise cricket hasn't changed over the last seven years. My approach to the IPL, BBL, I have looked at the Australian schedule and want to be as fit and well-performed for that as I can. And franchise cricket has taken a back seat.
"The schedule in the next 18 months is ridiculous. I will always keep Australian cricket front of mind, and then franchise cricket (second). I also like spending time at home and seeing my wife (Australia wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy)."
Australia is currently playing an all-format series in Sri Lanka. The Baggy Green squad emerged victorious in the T20Is, while the island nation won the ODIs.
Australia then fought back and clinched the first Test by 10 wickets. The second and final Test is set to start on July 8 at Galle.
