Tendulkar, Sehwag, Laxman celebrate 39th anniversary of India’s 1983 World Cup triumph

June 25, 2022 marks the 39th anniversary of India’s maiden World Cup triumph.

India were the ultimate underdogs in the competition and had defeated two times World Champions, West Indies, in the final to lift the coveted trophy at Lord’s.

June 25, 2022 marks the 39th anniversary of India’s first World Cup win. Remembering the historic triumph, Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted: “Some moments in life inspire you & make you dream. On this day in 1983, we won the World Cup for the first time. I knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do too!”

Former India opener Virender Sehwag too put out a tweet to celebrate the 39th anniversary of 1983 World Cup victory.

“Date mein kya rakha hai? Well, 25th June, is date mein shuruaat rakhi hai. It is a day on which India began it’s journey-in 1932 playing it’s first ever Test & 51 years later on 25th June 1983, Kapil Paaji & his boys winning the World Cup,which was a beginning for many cricketers,” Sehwag wrote.

Indian batting great VVS Laxman, who is now serving as NCA chief, also said that he was inspired by the 1983 World Cup triumph.

“Today in 1983 was when every Indian got the feeling that dreams can be brought to reality! A moment that will make us proud always! I, like many others was inspired by this win and started dreaming of representing the country someday,” Laxman tweeted.

Kapil Dev and company were able to defend a target of 183 in the 1983 World Cup final. India had restricted the mighty West Indies from making a hat-trick of World Cup wins by beating them with a margin of 43 runs, with Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal picking up 3 wickets each.
