'A lot of young openers ahead of Prithvi Shaw', says former India selector Saba Karim

Despite having a good stint with the bat in IPL 2022, Shaw wasn't included for the ongoing T20I series against South Africa.

Prithvi Shaw, India's young opening batter, was overlooked when the squad for the two T20 Internationals against Ireland was released. Despite his propensity to offer rapid starts with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shaw has only played one T20I for India, which occurred last year in Sri Lanka, where he was dismissed for a golden duck.

Despite being a player with enormous potential, Shaw has not been able to create the impact that the likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad have managed to, helping them go ahead of Shaw in the pecking order.

Former India selector Saba Karim stated why Shaw is now being overlooked by selectors during a press interaction.

"Right now there are a lot of young openers ahead of Prithvi Shaw and that is why he is down in the pecking order. But that does not mean he can't come back quickly. He is blessed with an amazing repertoire of shots. He has done so well for DC in the past two seasons, one expects him to be more consistent and put on more runs on the board which he is capable of," Saba Karim said in response to a query from NDTV..

Apart from being a little more consistent with the bat, Saba Karim said Prithvi Shaw should focus on his fitness as well.

"He also needs to work very hard on his fitness so that he's able to compete with the other openers in the side. I think he just needs to bide his time and keep piling on runs, that's all. And I think for such youngsters they have enough time to make a comeback in the national side," the former India wicketkeeper concluded.

The two T20Is between India and Ireland are scheduled to be played on June 26 and 28.
