Over the last couple of months, the Indian cricket team has gone through a lot of changes which has left the team with a new leadership group in the coaching department and a new leader in all the formats of the game.

Ravi Shastri’s four-year tenure as Indian team coach came to an end after the T20 World Cup 2021, and legendary Indian batter Rahul Dravid was appointed as the new head of India by the BCCI.

In last 6 months, Virat Kohli gave up the captaincy of all 3 formats of the game. While he decided to quit the T20I captaincy in September, BCCI sacked him from the ODI captaincy as well in December.

Kohli announced his resignation from Tests after Team India’s 1-2 series defeat against South Africa. Rohit Sharma was named as the new white ball captain for India and the board is yet to announce a leader for the Tests.

With so many changes in the team, former coach Ravi Shastri advised Rahul Dravid to make changes in this period of transition.

Talking on Shoaib Akhtar’s YouTube channel, Shastri said, “It’s a very important period for Indian cricket, there will be a period of transition in the next 8-10 months. It’s important to identify the right kind of players who will take you forward in 4-5 years. I always believe that there should be a mix between youth and experience.

"Sometimes change is needed if you aim for the future. This is the time. They need to look for youth in the next six months, need to be quick. If you stick with the same for too long a period then the adjustment will be very difficult."

Dravid’s tenure as the head coach did not get off to the best starts as India lost both their Test and ODI series on his first overseas assignment in South Africa.
