One of the biggest questions in world cricket right now is - who will be the replacement of Virat Kohli as the next Test captain of India? Virat became the most successful Indian Test captain after leading the side for 7 years. He decided to step down from his position after the 1-2 defeat against South Africa last week.
While Rohit Sharma can be an easy choice to take over the captaincy, there are people who believe that KL Rahul or Ravichandran Ashwin can be his competitors in the race. Former England batter, Kevin Pietersen shared his opinion on the topic and said Rohit Sharma will be the “best” choice for taking over the role.
Praising Rohit’s captaincy figures, Pietersen said “no one can beat” the opener in the race.
"Rohit Sharma will be the best Test captain for India as his leadership quality was too good and he has five IPL trophies so no one can beat him in the race of Test captaincy I guess," Pietersen told ANI on the sidelines of Legends League Cricket.
Rohit was appointed as the white-ball captain last year in December. Kohli had already announced his decision of resigning from the T20I captaincy after T20 World Cup in November. The BCCI then decided to go with one captain in the limited-overs cricket instead of split captaincy.
Pietersen mentioned Kohli was a “good captain” but his decision of stepping down must be a personal one and no one should question it.
"Virat Kohli was a good captain but if he wants to go then that could be anyone's personal decision no one can interfere in it," he added.
KL Rahul is the stand-in captain in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. Kohli is playing as a batter and scored 51 runs in the previous ODI.
India will be playing their next Test series against Sri Lanka at home in February.
Speaking about his stint in Legends Cricket League, Pietersen, said, "I am very excited to be back on the ground and our boys are behaving like kids as we can't hide our excitement of playing cricket again."
"This kind of league is really inspiring to the old players we still have the ability to play and we are really excited to get back on the ground," he added.
