Kohli stepped down as India's Test captain after leading the side for seven years.

Virat Kohli | GettyBCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has lauded Virat Kohli’s contributions as a captain of the Indian Test team and added that the board respects his decision to quit captaincy of the longest format.

Kohli on Saturday (January 15) stepped down as India's Test captain after leading the side for seven years.

"We respect Virat Kohli's decision. His contribution to Indian cricket has been immense and as a Test captain, he got us a maximum no of victories. I hope and think that he will continue to contribute as a player to Team India and Indian cricket," Shukla told ANI.

Virat Kohli led India in 68 Tests, winning 40 matches and losing 17. He holds the record for most Test appearances and most Test wins by an Indian captain. Only Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh have won more matches than Kohli as captain in Test cricket.

Under his captaincy, Team India won their maiden Test series on Australian soil in 2018-19. He also captained the side to two Test series wins in West Indies and Sri Lanka. Kohli was at the helm when India were leading 2-1 in England last year, before the fifth and final Test got postponed due to COVID cases in the visiting camp.

His last outing as captain was the Cape Town Test in South Africa, which India lost by seven wickets to suffer a 2-1 series defeat.
