Virat Kohli on Saturday (January 15) stunned one and all as he quit the Test captaincy of the Indian cricket team.
Kohli took to Twitter to make the big announcement, a day after India’s 2-1 Test series loss to South Africa.
"It's been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I've done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Every thing has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it's now," he said in a statement.
After the news, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wished Kohli for "the various other innings to come" and said that the fans will continue to support the batting legend.
“Dear @imVkohli, you’ve been greatly loved by millions of cricket fans over the years. They will support you in this phase too. Best wishes for the various other innings to come!,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
Virat Kohli had taken charge of the Test team during the 2014 tour of Australia. Under his captaincy, Team India tasted huge success in the last seven years. He led India in 68 Tests, registering 40 wins, including the series victories in Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka.
Kohli was the captain of the side when India were leading 2-1 in England last year, before the series got postponed due to COVID cases in the visiting camp.
