Lance Klusener has decided to step down as the head coach of the Afghanistan cricket team. Klusener had taken the charge of Afghanistan team from Phil Simmons in September 2019 and was handed the leadership role for two years.
His tenure as a head coach is coming to an end on 31st December and the former South African all-rounder has opted against extending his contract.
Releasing an official statement, Lance Klusener confirmed the same and said that he’ll take away some memorable moments along with him.
"I, Lance Klusener, have decided not to extend my contract as the head coach of the Afghanistan men's cricket team which finishes on 31st December 2021. Having spent two years with the team, I will take away some memorable moments with the team," Lance Klusener said in a statement.
Lance Klusener, who previously worked as the batting coach of Zimbabwe and South Africa, said that after his tenure ends with Afghanistan he’ll look forward to the next stage in his coaching career.
"As I walk away from Afghanistan cricket team and its cricketing structure, I look forward to the next stage in my coaching career and the opportunities it brings," he said.
Lance Klusener coached Afghanistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Under him, the Mohammed Nabi-led side finished fourth on the points table in their group with two wins out of their five matches.
