Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch has on Wednesday (October 6) said that the players backed Cricket Australia’s (CA) decision to call off the one-off Test against Afghanistan in November if the Taliban doesn’t lift the ban on women’s players from playing cricket.

CA had already made it clear that Australia would cancel the one-off Test against Afghanistan, starting on November 27 in Hobart if the Taliban stick to its decision of banning women from playing the game, and Finch said the Australian players are in full support of their board’s move over the same.

As reported by Reuters, Finch told reporters in a media call on Wednesday: “It’s a really challenging time no doubt, but we’re supportive of Cricket Australia’s position.”

Currently, the Afghanistan team is preparing for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman from October 17.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will discuss Afghanistan and women’s cricket at its next board meeting during the T20 World Cup 2021, where Australia wouldn’t meet Afghanistan unless both teams advance to at least the semi-finals in the global event later this year.

Finch signed off by saying, “That’s an ICC decision. We’re hopeful that things can resolve itself and Afghanistan can play a huge part in international cricket. We’ve seen how important they are, the development of their game in Afghanistan no doubt is huge.”
