Split captaincy is a good idea as Rohit can lead well; I feel it will benefit India, says Madan Lal

Reports said that Virat Kohli wanted to give up captaincy to concentrate on his batting.

Former India coach Madan Lal believes that the split captaincy could be a nice option for the all-format captain Virat Kohli, as it will only “ease the pressure” on one of the best batsmen of the game.

There were reports saying that the Indian cricket team could see a split captaincy between Kohli and Rohit Sharma who will take over the reins in ODI and T20I cricket. Reports suggested that Kohli will step down as India's white-ball captain with Rohit taking over after T20 World Cup 2021.

However, the BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has quashed the rumors reports by saying “nothing such is happening" and Kohli “will remain as the captain of all formats” of Team India.

Though, Madan Lal backed the idea of split captaincy as he feels it could benefit India in a big way.

Madan Lal told IANS: “I guess this could be a nice option. We are in a very good position right now. We are lucky that we have Rohit Sharma in the team and whenever Virat Kohli feels that he wants to concentrate on one or two formats then Rohit can step in, and he has a lot of experience.”

He added, “So, in a way, I feel it will benefit India. I read that Virat is likely to step down from captaincy (of ODI and T20) as he wants to concentrate on his batting, which is a good idea I guess. I don’t know whether it is a rumor or what… but the split captaincy plan could benefit India in a big way.”

Lal signed off by saying, “It all depends on what Virat is thinking right now. India as a team is doing a great job; we have seen that in England (Test series) recently. So, let’s see what happens.”
