Indian cricket team’s captain Virat Kohli and limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma congratulated the national athletes who participated in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics 2020. The Olympic games concluded on Sunday, 8th August with a colorful closing ceremony.
Tokyo 2020 saw two weeks of high octane action in various sports. This was India’s most successful Olympic Games with seven medals which included one gold medal, two silver medals, and four bronze medals.
Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal for his 87.58-meter Javelin throw. This was India’s first-ever Gold medal in an Athletics event. Mirabai Chanu and Ravi Kumar Dahiya won silver medals in weightlifting and men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling respectively.
PV Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two medals at the Olympics after winning a bronze medal in women’s singles badminton. She had won a silver medal at Rio Olympics in 2016. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain won bronze in the welterweight category and wrestler Bajrang Punia secured bronze in the men’s freestyle 65kg category.
Indian men’s hockey team made history by winning a medal after a 41-year medal drought, while the women’s hockey team suffered heartbreak in their bronze medal match against Great Britain.
Virat Kohli was to take the field on the final day of the first Test against England but rain washed out the entire day. The Indian captain took to Twitter to congratulate the Indian contingent.
“Congratulations to all our winners and participants at the Olympics. Winning and losing is a part of sport, but what matters is you gave your best for the nation. We are so proud of you and I wish you all the very best going forward. Jai Hind," Virat Kohli tweeted.
Rohit Sharma also took to Twitter and said, “Very well done to all our athletes from various fields. They went out there and gave their best. Special mention to Neeraj Chopra. You all have made nation proud.”
R Ashwin also tweeted to congratulate the athletes, tweeting, "A tribute to all the athletes who won medals and brought laurels to our country and most importantly to the entire contingent of superstars who tried valiantly. We are proud of you," he tweeted.
