The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday (August 7) announced hefty prize money for India’s Olympics medallists of Tokyo 2020.

Taking to Twitter, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed the cash prizes for India’s athletes.

The announcement comes after javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in track and field in the Olympics. He threw a distance of 87.58m to secure the gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

As a result of Neeraj Chopra’s historic win, India has now won seven medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - best ever performance at the multi-sporting event.

Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (silver), Ravi Kumar Dahiya (silver), Bajrang Punia (bronze), PV Sindhu (bronze), Lovlina Borgohain (bronze), and men’s hockey team (bronze), have also secured medals.

For the gold medallist, BCCI declared the prize of INR 1 Crore, 50 Lakh each to the two silver medallists while the individual bronze medallists get 25 lakh each.

The Indian board announced the sum of INR 1.25 Crore for the Indian men’s hockey team.

In his tweet, Jay Shah wrote: “INR 1 Cr. - First place medal medallist @Neeraj_chopra1 50 lakh each - Second place medal medallists @mirabai_chanu & Ravi Kumar Dahiya 25 lakh each – Third place medal medallists @Pvsindhu1, @LovlinaBorgohai, @BajrangPunia INR 1.25 Cr. – @TheHockeyIndia men's team.”

He also tagged BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, treasurer Arun Dhumal and vice-president Rajeev Shukla in his post.
