The England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) new brainchild format of cricket- the Hundred has seen a mixed response thus far. Both men’s and women’s 100-ball tournament has seen some exciting matches with a good balance of bat and ball.

However, the crowd has not been treated for what they come to the ground which is some lusty sixes and fours as pitches have been slightly on the bowler’s side, which while being a good thing, has made for a slow pace 100 balls.

Even Indian great Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that the Hundred tournament has been insipid and borderline boring.

“Having seen it on TV, the only word that comes to mind is insipid. The cricket is ordinary and the coverage average with basic mistakes in player information which, if made in the sub-continent, would have been mocked at especially by the former England players, not to speak of the headlines that the tabloids would have generated,” Gavaskar wrote in his column in the daily Mid-day.

This has seen hordes of former England players defending the tournament and have been hyping up the new format which has seen its struggles with COVID-19 and quarantine rules leading to many international stars pulling out of the tournament in men’s tournament.

One of the former England stars defending the 100-ball tournament is Michael Vaughan, who has been replying to multiple tweets criticizing the format and lack of excitement in the new format of cricket.

“Cynical traditional haters of the 100 will never change, but I am loving so many people saying they are going to go to games now they have seen it, People who have never been to cricket .. that’s exactly what the 100 is about .. Creating a new vibe about cricket .. It’s working,” Vaughan tweeted.

Furthermore, he replied a bit bluntly to a fan pointing out the lack of support by fans to the franchises.

He even pointed out how Sir Geoffrey Boycott praised the Hundred tournament and tweeted, “Even Sir Geoffrey likes the 100 … many see him as an old school type but he has always been the one who has had great vision for the game … he was the first to suggest Day/Night Test cricket.”

He ended up hyping the 100 even more and said, “This 100 will never catch on they said .. Fans won’t support new teams they said .. !!!!! Trent Bridge is rocking .. The 100 is fantastic ..”
