Former Pakistan captain and current batting coach Younis Khan recently recalled an incident when he was once scolded by his then skipper and wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan after he was dismissed for a duck in a One Day International (ODI) against India.

Younis is considered as one of the finest batsmen to have ever played for Pakistan having scored more than 10,000 Test runs and over 7000 runs in the ODIs in his international career. However, like every cricketer, he also experienced a lean patch at the beginning of his career.

The incident was from an ODI game between India and Pakistan back in March 2000. It was only his fourth ODI innings, and could only be at the crease for two balls as Khan was dismissed for a duck by Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble.

Well, then captain Moin was not happy with young Younis’ dismissal and he lashed out at the cricketer for being out for a duck, as the Pakistan batting was suffering a collapse, and eventually, they suffered a five-wicket defeat against India in Sharjah.

Speaking to reporters at the Moin Khan Academy in Karachi, Younis recalled: “I remember I started my international cricket under Moin Khan. He has scolded me as well. I got out in a match against India for a duck and Moin bhai was at the other end and he wasn’t happy at all. But, thanks to him, I learned from my mistakes and he has had a big role to play in my success in international cricket.”

On Pakistan’s batting woes, the batting coach said: “We have spoken a lot about the Pakistan middle-order. We are trying out many players as well and hopefully, we will have a stable middle-order soon. We played South Africa both home and away and also toured Zimbabwe.”

He signed off, “Now, we are going to England and West Indies. There are some very good tours coming up and hopefully, Pakistan will keep putting up good performances and win more trophies.”
