Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan has revealed that the former Pakistan captain and the then Afghanistan coach, Inzamam ul Haq had given him his international debut on the basis of just one ball.
The 17-year-old was picked in the Afghanistan squad against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe but did not play the first ODI. After the visitors lost the game, Inzamam himself padded up in the nets ahead of the second ODI.
He faced a young Rashid and cut him well for the first two balls. The spinner then bowled one a wrong ‘un and surprised Inzamam. It was due to that one delivery that Inzamam decided to give Rashid Khan his international debut.
Rashid Khan aims to become a "proper all-rounder" in the future
Rashid Khan told ESPNCricInfo, “In the practice session (before the 2nd ODI), Inzamam himself padded up and said he wanted to face me himself. You know how strong he is with the cut shot. The first two balls I bowled, he cut.”
“So I thought I will bowl a wrong ‘un from the same spot, let’s see what happens. He didn’t get out but the ball beat him. At that point itself, he came outside the net and told me, ‘Be ready for the match tomorrow, you will be part of the team’,” he added.
Rashid returned with figures of 1/30 in his 10 overs and scored 8 not out with the bat in just 4 balls. In the 6th year of his international cricket career, the 22-year-old has 140 ODI wickets in 74 matches. He also has 23 wickets in 4 Tests and 89 wickets in 48 T20Is for Afghanistan.
