SL v ENG 2021: “Utter Garbage” Michael Vaughan terms Sri Lanka’s performance “worst ad for Test cricket"

Sri Lanka was bundled out for 135 in 1st inns of the Galle Test.

Dom Bess (5/30) and Stuart Broad (3/26) were the main wickettakers for England | SLCFormer England captain Michael Vaughan was disgusted with hosts Sri Lanka’s performance on the first day of the first Test against England at Galle. Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and chose to bat.

However, Stuart Broad (3/20) and Dom Bess (5/30) combined to rout the Islanders for 135 runs in 46.1 overs. Angelo Mathews made 27, Dinesh Chandimal made 28, while Kusal Perera and Dasun Shanaka also reached the 20s. However, the biggest disappointment was talented Kusal Mendis who collected his fourth duck in as many Test innings.

Lasith Embuldeniya removed both England openers in Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley, but Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root holding the fort. England ended day one on 127/2 with Root on 66* and Bairstow on 47*.

SL v ENG 2021: Kusal Mendis gets dismissed for a fourth consecutive duck; Twitterati reacts

This performance from the Sri Lankan side deserved criticism and it came from former England captain Michael Vaughan who took to Twitter and blasted the home side. He called their innings the worst advertisement for Test cricket while calling their batting utter garbage.

Those 46.1 overs have been the worst possible advertisement for Test Cricket ...  it’s supposed to be the pinnacle ... that was utter garbage Sri Lanka ... #SLvENG ... anyway time for a brew #OnOn,” Vaughan tweeted.

England have been very very good so far today .... the complete opposite can be said of Sri Lanka .... The batting has been atrocious  .... #SLvENG @bbctms,” he again tweeted.

England is due to play one more Test at Galle, starting January 22, before flying to India to play 4 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 5 T20Is starting February 5, 2021.
