Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson on Tuesday (November 3) called time on his professional cricket career.

This means that Watson will not feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for his franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the next edition. The 39-year-old last played against Kolkata Knight Riders on October 29.

“It all started out as a dream. As a young kid, saying to my mom as I watch a Test match as a 5-year-old, I want to play cricket for Australia. And now as I officially announce my retirement from all cricket, I feel crazily lucky to have lived out my dream and then some,” Watson said in a video posted on T20 Stars YouTube channel.

“It does feel like a right time. Now, I ended up played my last game of cricket ever for my beloved CSK, who have been so incredibly good to me over the last three years,” he added.

Shane Watson had retired from international cricket after the T20 World Cup in 2016. He has been no less than an IPL legend, doing well for different franchises. Watson was the Player-of-the-Tournament in the inaugural season of the IPL which saw Rajasthan Royals lifting the coveted trophy. He was fetched by CSK two years ago and played an instrumental role in the Chennai-based franchise’s fourth IPL title win in 2018 with a century in the final.

Watson, who has represented Australia in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is, won the World Cup twice in 2007 and 2015. In Tests, he scored 3731 runs and claimed 75 wickets while he amassed 5757 runs and scalped 168 wickets in ODIs to finish his career as one of the leading all-rounders of his era.
