Gary Stead has been reappointed as New Zealand cricket team's head coach, as the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has extended the tenure of the 48-year-old for a further three years, which will allow him to stay in the role until the World Cup 2023 in India.

He joined the Black Caps in 2018 on a two-year-deal, replacing former head coach Mike Hesson, just 11 months before the 2019 World Cup, and has done a really good job so far – which earned him a fresh three-year contract with New Zealand Cricket on Wednesday (September 2).

David White, the NZC CEO, revealed that the board approved the extension after a panel interviewed Stead last week and satisfied with his vision for the team. White stated, “What was immediately clear was that Gary had overseen a particularly successful chapter in New Zealand cricket history, during which time his team had been very strong in the Test and ODI formats.”

On his re-appointment, Stead said: “It's an honor and a privilege to be re-appointed. I think this group of players is growing as a team; there's an exciting schedule ahead of us and I know everyone is feeling very optimistic about our chances in all three formats.”

The head coach further added, “I'm very appreciative of the backing I've enjoyed from the players, the support staff and NZC and hope I can repay that confidence by helping the Blackcaps achieve their goals and objectives over the next three years.”

Noteworthy, Stead’s new tenure will start with the upcoming home season where they are set to take on the West Indies, Pakistan, Australia, and Bangladesh.
