Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has recalled his meeting with MS Dhoni in the 2011 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after India’s memorable World Cup triumph at home.
Recalling the emotional moment, Gavaskar, who was part of India’s 1983 World Cup triumph, revealed he had told Dhoni that he’d love to say goodbye to this world while watching his 2011 World Cup-winning six against Sri Lanka at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The former captain further said the recently-retired legend Dhoni just smiled and did not say anything after listening to his last wish at his death bed because watching that shot would bring a smile to his face while saying goodbye to this world.
Dhoni’s that famous shot off Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara not only won the ODI World Cup 2011 for India but also won the millions of hearts and is still the favorite shot of many including the legendary Gavaskar.
With India needed 4 runs to win, Dhoni magic worked again for India, as the dashing wicketkeeper-batsman struck a powerful a six over long-on to finish the grand final in a style at Wankhede.
Gavaskar told India Today: “A few days later IPL started, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were playing their first match and I was at the ground. I met MSD and said, ‘look in this world if I’ve got a couple of minutes left, I’m gonna ask someone to put that shot on because I’d love to see that shot and say goodbye to this world. Because that would be a fantastic way, I’d go with a smile on my face. That’s exactly what I had said to MSD and he was of course pretty modest about it. He smiled and didn’t say anything.”
He concluded, “Generally, if you look at wins, there has got to be a little romance involved and I think that particular way he finished it made it even more romantic.”
