"It happened to me so other people can learn from me": Shakib-Al-Hasan on his one-year ban

Shakib Al Hasan was banned by ICC for failing to report multiple corrupt approaches.

Shakib Al Hasan | ReutersReflecting upon his failure to report corrupt approaches and the subsequently imposed ban on him by the ICC, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan rued his mistake, but said that he is beginning to move on from the controversy now.

ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit enforced a back-dated two-year ban on Shakib, which ends in October this year, for failing to inform them about repeated approaches from a bookie in 2018.

In a videocast hosted by former India wicketkeeper batsman Deep Dasgupta for ESPNcricinfo's 'Cricketbaazi' show, Shakib said he was really honest when finally interrogated over the matter by ICU authorities and urged others to learn from his negligence.

"You have to be honest," he said. "You just can't lie to the people and pretend different things. Whatever happened has happened. People are bound to make mistakes. You are not 100%. The important thing is how well you can come back from those mistakes. You can tell other people not to make those mistakes. Tell them the path so that they never take those paths."

"It could have happened to someone else and I would have learned from him, but it happened to me so other people can learn from me. I wanted to be honest from the first day. I didn't hide anything from the guys when they were asking me questions. I will say the straightforward things."

"I made mistakes. It shouldn't happen for a player like me. I apologised for it, and I want to move forward, I want everyone to learn from it and never make these mistakes," he added.

Shakib had accepted three charges of breaching ICC anti-corruption code in 2019.

It was revealed that the player failed to report approaches made to him during a tri-series in January 2018 and one match in IPL while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Inarguably Bangladesh's greatest cricketer, Shakib will be eligible to play for his country once again from October 29 this year.
