ICC expected to finalise nomination process for new chairman next week

The governing body is yet to reach consensus over the details of the process.

Outgoing chairman Shashank Manohar | AFP The International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to finalise the nomination process to replace Shashank Manohar, its outgoing chairman, next week.

The governing body is still trying to reach an agreement on certain issues related to the electoral process for Manohar's replacement.

On Thursday (June 25), the ICC Board met via video conference, with the main agenda being whether to adopt a process that selects or elects Manohar's replacement.

"It was a good discussion on Chair process between the members. At least I am confident that by next week, we will have the entire process finalised," an ICC Board member told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"There are still a few points that need to be clarified. Hopefully, we will reach a consensus by next week," stressed the board member on being asked why the process couldn't be finalised by now.

A decision over the fate of the T20 World Cup, scheduled in Australia from October 18 to November 15, amid the COVID-19 pandemic has also been deferred to next month. The 16-team event seems unlikely to take place on time due to logistical issues in wake of the deadly outbreak, which has resulted in an unprecedented health crisis.

"We had a lot of administrative issues that were discussed. I am not at liberty to divulge those," the member said.

The Ethics Officer of the ICC, it is believed, has updated the members on the investigations with regards to leaks of classified emails prior to a meeting last month.

Most of the board members weren't ready to reveal what are the key areas of difference, but it is understood that the major argument is over whether a selection or election process is to be adopted.

Colin Graves, the former ECB chairman, and current BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly, are deemed to be in contention for the post. However, it is unlikely that either of them will go for the election.

The report by PTI states that Ganguly’s candidature is not even confirmed as of now. But both he and Graves would prefer being a unanimous candidate for the top post.

A lot of the developments in this matter depend on whether the Supreme Court of India gives a date of hearing for the Interim Appeal filed by BCCI. The appeal is to try and ensure that Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah’s cooling off period is waived off.
