The Australian team won their second World Cup title on this day, June 20, in 1999 by defeating Pakistan in the finals at the Lord’s ground in London. This came three years after losing in the finals against Sri Lanka in Lahore in 1996.

Under the leadership of Steve Waugh, who had taken over just about a year ago, the Australian team had a troubled tournament, where they lost to Pakistan in the group stages and were troubled by South Africa a lot. However, they triumphed over their nemesis in the semi-finals in one of the best ODIs ever and booked a ticket against Pakistan.

However, the final proved to be a one-sided affair as Shane Warne’s four wickets routed Wasim Akram’s side for just 132 runs, a target which Australia overhauled with ease, losing just two wickets with Adam Gilchrist bludgeoning a 36 ball 54.

Ricky Ponting recalled the day of the final in a tweet that read, "Can't believe it's been 21 years since the 99 World Cup final, the highlight of my career to that point. It finished with me on @TomMoodyCricket's shoulders in the middle of Lord's singing the team song, an amazing experience.

To this Tom Moody, who won the World Cup for the second time after 1987, replied, “Very special day Punter, I’m still recovering from that carry in the middle!! ???? #WorldCup
