Even if quietly, there have certainly been talks that India could try and see how the split captaincy might work out with Virat Kohli presumably remaining the Test captain but relinquishing the post for Rohit Sharma in shorter formats.

The advocators of the thought feel it would allow Kohli, also the team's best batsman across all formats, to manage his workload slightly better.

In an interview with Sportskeeda, former India fast bowler Atul Wassan recently endorsed the same idea and said, “Yes, I think India should think about split captaincy because it is too much load. Virat loves it, I think he wants to captain all three formats. But Rohit Sharma has shown us that he’s an instinctive leader.”

On occasions when Kohli has opted out of a series, it is Rohit who has taken over the leadership duties and achieved good results.

Wassan pointed out Rohit’s record in those limited opportunities and also spoke about his accomplishments as a captain in the Indian Premier League.

Notably, Sharma has led Mumbai Indians to four IPL titles after becoming the skipper in 2013.  

“His record is good, he leads from the front. With Mumbai Indians, he did the same,” he added.

Atul Wassan, however, backs Kohli to continue lead Team India in Tests and ODIs.

“In Test cricket, Virat is the boss. In one day-cricket, Virat should be the captain, but in T20Is, take the stress out of Virat’s life, and let someone else lead the side like Rohit Sharma,” he said.
