There have been a lot of talks surrounding split captaincy in the Indian cricket team for a long time despite the fact that there is no split captaincy culture in the Indian cricket and even with many calling to make Rohit Sharma the captain of the T20I side.
However, former chairman of selectors MSK Prasad didn’t make any changes in captaincy as he believes that the leadership brings the best of Virat Kohli.

Well, Kohli’s periodical absence – which has given Rohit, who won 4 IPL titles for Mumbai Indians so far, to lead Men in Blue with significant success – major title victory in Nidahas Trophy and Asia Cup both in 2018, has been constantly raising the split captaincy issue with the final decision lies with Sunil Joshi-led new selection panel.
Recently, former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar has also reacted to the same, saying Rohit is the right candidate for the role, but now it’s too late to make any changes with the two back to back T20 World Cup in line to be played later this year and next year.
Speaking to Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel, Agarkar said: “If you are a good enough candidate. Why not? Two things – there is so much cricket including two months of IPL, apart from international cricket. If Virat Kohli is playing day in and day out…it starts tiring him out. Especially in T20I cricket. There isn’t much T20I cricket. One-day (cricket) I am not so sure.”
The 42-year old further explained, “Virat still looks in charge in one-day cricket. T20I cricket…. there is a World Cup this year and next year. It’s a bit late. You have to look at the performance of the team. You have to look at the team’s performance…. are you getting enough wins? Is the team progressing…not just winning but is it getting better every time? The decision should be taken after that.”
Agarkar signed off by saying, “Are there enough candidates in the team? As you said, Rohit has proved in T20s and he looks the only candidate if you look at it. There is nothing wrong in taking that decision if Kohli is tired or the team’s performance is not good.”
Noteworthy, India has won 22 out of 27 T20Is under Kohli while Rohit has captained the side to 15 victories from 19 T20Is at a winning percentage of 78.94 so far.
