Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson is expectedly unhappy with the results he produced in Test cricket despite his talent.

The fans know how valuable a player Watson is in shorter formats of the game with his ability to bat high up in the order and to deceive the batsmen with his seam-bowling skills.

However, the Australians and Shane himself would have expected a lot more from him in the longest format of the game. Watson retired from Test with 3731 runs in 59 matches at an average of 35.19 and 75 wickets to add up as well.

Yuvraj Singh reveals when he first thought of retiring from the game

Watson believes that the mistake that he made playing Test cricket was that he was not in the right mental state to approach his innings and tried too hard to do well. As a result, he did not have the right mentality to perform to bat for longer periods of time.

I look back at my Test career and I know with the skill I had I did not like the outcomes I had, now I know that my mental application during Test matches was usually fatigued, I just wanted to do too well in every Test match I played, I used to make a mistake because I had burnt myself,” Watson told former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh in the former’s latest podcast called ‘Learning with the Greats’.

"I never looked into my mindset as to where I was into the lead-up to the game and that is why I was not able to bat for long periods of time. In the shorter formats, there was a goal and I knew how to go about things," he added.

Yuvraj Singh, who had a similar issue with his career, agreed to the Australian’s points while regretting that he could not have a long Test career for India.
