Waqar Younis disagrees with idea of cricket resuming behind closed doors amidst COVID-19 crisis

Waqar says cricket should be resumed only after the world gets back some normalcy in life.

Pakistan’s fast-bowling legend and current national bowling coach Waqar Younis has on Monday, April 6, voiced against the opinions of resuming game at the empty stadiums amid the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak all around the world.

As the entire world fights the worsening health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, all sporting activities have been banned across the globe with many planning to resume the game behind closed doors, but Waqar isn’t really in favor of playing cricket at the moment.

Former Pakistan captain and coach believe that there shouldn't be any cricket at the moment especially knowing that the world is in danger due to the COVID-19 outbreak – which has claimed nearly 70,000 deaths so far globally, saying the desperate plan would end up creating more problems.

In a video conference with journalists on Monday, Waqar said: “No I don't agree with this suggestion that cricket activities should resume soon even before empty stadiums.”

The former pacer further explained: “I think maybe in five- or six months’ time. when things are under control around the world and we get back some normalcy in life, we can think about matches behind closed doors. At some stage we need to think about these choices but not this month or next month...the situation is not right for any cricket activities.”

Meanwhile, Waqar was very keen to see the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2020 to be held this year in Australia even if slightly delayed, as he wishes to be part of major title-winning management.

He signed off by saying, “Whenever I have played for Pakistan as a player or been a coach with the Pakistan team it has always been my desire to see the team win a major ICC title. That is why this World T20 is so important for me and the team. I would like to be part of management where we can win a major title.”
